Why people don't write

I am sure there are plenty of EXCUSES people don't write.
I can make up things to excuse myself from doing lots of different things all day and I do!

One of the main reasons people don't write is because I don't think they think of it as an art form.  I very rarely see it mentioned /compared to an art form but indeed it is.

I was taking a thinking about Pablo Picasso which is a well known artist who is known for abstract art.

I was thinking about what if there were an abstract type of writing.  (In today's world it wouldn't surprise me if it already exists).

The question isn't whether it is already exists yet though the question is do people know about it?

If they don't know / haven't thought about it then most people probably don't think / haven't thought much about writing being an art form.  There could be some other conclusions as well...but in general I don't recall writing being mentioned as an art form much of my childhood.  I realize that I am one dot in the world and I could be completely off but I am sticking with this assumption for now =D.

P.S.

Poetry seems to be referenced in terms of writing as the "Artistic" way of writing.  At least in my mind that is where I would probably fit it.

Glad I have come to the realization that writing is an Art.

Off track question...
If people don't know about something does it matter if it exists?  This question is for another time.

English needs new words!

It seems to me that the world is in need of new words (at least English does).  A lot of the new words that have been canonized (added to the dictionary) recently have been pretty lame and not particularly useful.

To me there are many instances in life that are just not very well defined but happen to everyone from time to time.

Instead of having a word to describe them we just chuck them off into a pile of something and just attribute it to  "forgetfulness" or "miss communication" and just forget all about them until they occur again.

For example last night me and my wife were going somewhere and I needed to bring along something to where we were going.

So I placed the object down between both of us for some reason in my mind the matter was resolved.  I guess unconsciously I may have thought by my putting it where I put it maybe she would pick it up.

When this similar type of event (quarterback and running back think each other has the ball) happens in football it is referred to as a fumble but even then there are different types of fumbles but we usually just refer to most of them as fumbles (Butt fumble is currently the only other fumble type that I am aware of and that is because I am sure ESPN spent millions rebroadcasting it over and over and over again).

A lot of miss communication I think could be reduced by condensing events down into new words that accurately define the an event.

Sarcasm

Sarcasm seems to be prevalent a lot today especially on the internet.

I have enjoyed sarcasm in the past and still do but I was thinking this morning how it is often misused.

I can't really formulate a good explanation for this at the moment except for this question.

Is it more important to me to be funny or honest?

It seems to me that people use sarcasm to cover stuff up a lot of times instead of looking foolish.

I wish I had more to say but my brain seems to be a good bit muddled.

Terra Incognita

"...animal pathogens remain a scientific terra incognita."

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/14/science/rats-and-their-alarming-bugs.html

Terra = land
Incognita is essentially incognito which means more or less hidden.

If something is hidden you essentially don't know where it is so it is unknown.

If you search for "terra incognita" it means land unknown.

There is also the land Tierra del fuego = spanish for "land of fire".

Often in sci-fi and fantasy you hear the word tera or terra or something like that and it refers to earth.

It is interesting that when I have run into the word land is almost always referred to in the feminine form with the A at the end.  It makes complete sense because it is from the land we are able to survive just as we depend on our mothers for nourishment when we are born.

MOOC

Abbreviations are words too! At least they are used as words even if you don't know what they mean.

I just heard about MOOCs (pronounced Mooks) on the radio.  MOOC "Massive open online course" has been started being used by high school students applying to college.

I have some experience with some things that are similar but not necessarily MOOCs.  Duolingo may or may not be considered a MOOC.

Propriety

If you were to describe propriety another word that I would use would be properness but alas that isn't a real word. :/

Another word that I think would go well is uprightness.

Payday

Sure glad today is payday . My bank account has been screaming mayday.

Spastic

The word spastic is used differently depending on the geographic location of its use and the version of the English language in use there, which has led to some controversy and misunderstanding of the nature and appropriateness of the word.

vagary

-an unexpected and inexplicable change in a situation or in someone's behavior.
"the vagaries of the weather"

Hearsay

Hearsay = It means just how the word is split up.  Hear + Say.  You hear something and then you say something like a parrot repeating what was heard.

Brainwashed

Brainwashed = not being allowed or allowing yourself to think in a different way.

Sweat

"Don't sweat the small stuff."-anon

Consensus

It is interesting how often we look for consensus to somewhat determine things that are factual these days.

I understand that it is important in some things but I wonder if we bring it into our daily lives as well?

Do you need a consensus of people to believe that you are smart, funny, awesome, wonderful, and special person?

I don't think that to be anything requires a consensus of people who don't even know you to think you are what you think you are.

Whimsical

What would the world be like if the world were more whimsical?

in·for·ma·tion (85 words)

The root of the word information seems to me to be inform.  I need a Chinese proverb right about now....

To be informed is good but..I think that too much of a good thing can be bad.  I think this can also be true regarding information.

I wonder how much more information we bombard ourselves with each day.  Much of the information I think we absorb is pretty useless fluff as well.

I wonder if we are cankering our brains with all this extra junk.

Grapple

Fail

What is the definition of fail?

In school the definition usually is defined by your grade.  Is most schools if your score a 60% or lower you are technically failing.

That is one way to fail but there is so many ways you could define what failing is and it like success, perfection, etc. is in the eye of the beholder.

Could you technically be failing at something but not really failing?

To me I think the definition of insanity and the definition of fail should go together.

The definition of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".

To me that is failure.  Everyday is a new experiment and we can either choose to copy the previous days experiments and get the same results or we can try new experiments and get new outcomes.

I am not saying that experiments shouldn't ever be repeated by sometimes we get stuck in an infinite loop doing the same things day after day after day that we already know doesn't work.

What to do to get words entered into the dictionary..

Saw this on Merriam-Websters site:

The explanations I wrote.  The only things they mentioned were the words in bold.

1. Widespread usage (geographically) = I got all my friends on Facebook saying the word courvivaverilspiroul (spell check wants to change this word to ultra-conservative lol) and they got their friends saying it as well.  A lot of people have an understanding of the word and is using it.

2.  Sustained usage (time) = This could mean a few different things but I think it generally means the frequency of usage.

3.  Meaningful usage (purpose) = It is used for the purpose it was created?  Not sure about this one.

Now that we have identified what is required the question is how do you accomplish it?

You could come up with a close variant of a popular word that spells and sounds similar to what the current popular spells and sounds like.

You could find an area of language that is in need of some simplification or some specialization.

For example what do you call your 5th great grandfather?  You could just abbrv like it like 5th GgF.

You could just keep adding successiveness to each successive grandfather.

It could something like:

1st: Grandfather
2nd: Grandfatherer
3rd: Grandfathererer
4th: Grandfatherererer
5th: Grandfathererererer

Downloading vs. Uploading

In the most basic sense of these words downloading is when you are pulling information with your computer from another computer and it creates a file onto your computer.  Most often that other computer is a server.

When you upload you are pushing information to another computer from your computer.  Again most often that other computer is a server.

Downloading and Uploading is done by billions every day of the week.

One of the most common downloads : Saving photos from a website to your computer.

One of the most common uploads:  Posting a photo to facebook.

Parse , Parsimony

To me to parse something is to chop it into parts.  So imagine you have a knife and you have someones name and phone number written down on a piece of paper.

So say you wanted to separate the pieces of data (name and phone number).  You would parse it!  You could parse it further piece the data into (last name, first name, and phone number).

Like parse has to deal with separating things parsimoney is an unwillingness to spend money.  It means to be careful to parse your money.

grammar : to divide (a sentence) into grammatical parts and identify the parts and their relations to each other

: to study (something) by looking at its parts closely

Mathematics / Language / Universe

Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) said, "The universe cannot be read until we have learned the language and become familiar with the characters in which it is written. It is written in mathematical language, and the letters are triangles, circles and other geometrical figures, without which means it is humanly impossible to comprehend a single word. Without these, one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth.

Friday is perfect day...

Sic et Non?  Friday can be a perfect day if you choose to think of it that way.

Be conservative and save time, energy, and money.  Don't Squabble over the small Errors others make or your relationships might Plummet.

Thursday, May 1, 2014

Squabble

People these days squabble about a lot of dumb things.

I think this word relates a lot to the word scribble.  To scribble mean to write something down quickly.  I scribbled the phone number down because my phone was about to die.

The term squabble to me means to quarrel about things without giving much thought.  It is all too common in todays world that the phrase "think before you speak" has been lost to most.

Instead it is more like say whatever the crap that flys out of your mouth and if you get in trouble or if enough people get offended THEN appologize.

Sic et Non

Sic et Non es latin.  En la idioma de español estas iguales si o no?  Posible mas o menos?

Como tu haces plummet?
Quien tu haces conoces estas tienes plummeted recientemente?
Cuando es la ultima vez que usted plummeted?
Por que se plummet?

If something you owned dropped by 8 or 9 percent would that be a plummet?

Conservative

The dictionary definition of conservative is:

believing in the value of established and traditional practices in politics and society : relating to or supporting political conservatism

I am conservative.  I believe in conserving time, money, and values.  I know the republican party claims this term but I am not republican.  I believe it is better to stay aloof.

In a world that continue to Hypermetamorphosis from day to day conservatism is important.

Satire-

A feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm—"in satire, irony is militant"[

The word satire comes from the Latin word satur and the subsequent phrase lanx satura. Satur meant "full" but the juxtaposition with lanx shifted the meaning to "miscellany or medley": the expression lanx satura literally means "a full dish of various kinds of fruits."[4]

The origin of satire is considered to be Aristophanes' Old Comedy.

Historically, satire has satisfied the popular need to debunk and ridicule the leading figures in politics, economy, religion and other prominent realms of power.

George Washington VS. Steve Jobs

I have been reading two books at the moment:  1: "Steve Jobs"  By Walter Isaacson and "His Excellency" by  Joseph J. Ellis.

While reading these two books I have come upon the idea that Steve Jobs and George Washington I think were pretty a like in some aspects.

Both were definitely pretty widely regarded after their deaths and are still pretty renown.

There will definitely be period differences because of the times they both lived in but both I think sort of embraced the idea of rebel.

I think Steve Jobs embraced it more because of the time period he lived allow him to but both him and George Washington led rebellions even though we all know who's was more important and successful.

I think a big similarity between the two was that they embraced the idea "Think Different".  In both of their lives they allowed themselves to be different from the normal every day people and do different things.

In other words they were out of the box thinkers.  Jobs was constantly berating his fellow employees because I think he felt there was a mindset ingrained in them that they needed to be in the box.  So he forced them to think outside of the box and yelled at them when they didn't.  Washington didn't just think America was going to be an east coast place.  He often thought about the west.

"A man should learn to detect and foster that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within far more than the lustre of the whole firmament without. Yet he dismisses without notice his peculiar thought because it is peculiar."

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

From the peanut gallery:  What a great quote. Thanks for sharing. He is an author that really gets to me.

Thought of the day:

Isn't it amazing how we let little things bother us and drive us up the wall. The gas prices went up a few cents, I left a few minutes late, I left a coupon at home and now I am going to have to pay 50 more cents than I would have.

I understand that little things CAN BE important but some little things we shouldn't wrap our emotions around. It takes up too much energy which could be used for other stuff (reading comics, throwing snowballs, eating cookies, etc.)

Come What May, and Love It

This is a great phrase to ponder upon and learn from.

You can find more explanation of this phrase from an Apostle of God.  Here

Poem of the day:

"Good timber does not grow with ease,
The stronger wind, the stronger trees.
The further sky, the greater length.
The more the storm, the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow."

-Douglas Malloch

From the peanut gallery :  I was thinking about making this my status
Me:  it is ok you can make it your status too .
Peanut gallery:  love it.
Peanut gallery: Haha well, you got it from my status!

The most important thing I learned in elementary school..

Give yourself a pat on the back.

Forgive 70 times 7.

If it is good enough for Christ why isn't it good enough for ourselves?

"In order to be kind to ourselves, we must throttle judgement."

What do YOU want to be when you grow up? uhhhh...Ihop

It is interesting how we ask children "What do you want to be when you grow up?" instead why don't we just say things like "You'd be a great cryptoanalyst your really good at math!". At least then we are giving them ideas as well as a compliment to think about instead of a problem which they have no idea of solving.

Solving problems...Albert Einstein style..

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." -Albert Einstein

Thought of the day

You can love a computer but it won't love you back.

From the peanut gallery:  Is your computer not giving u any love? :), Computers don't give love.  We can love inanimate objects but they can't love us back, HAMMER WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER!  :)

Q of the day: Anyone have strategies for ignoring loud noises?

Trying to read while loud music is playing isn't working very well.

From the peanut gallery:  Put the book down and pick up the party hat, noise canceling headphones, and nyquil.

Quote of the day

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled."

Mestrius Plutarchos - (Plutarch)

45-125 AD

From the peanut gallery:  "And yet we still try to stuff our kids' heads full of facts and numbers in an effort to educate them. All we need to do is turn them on to learning, and watch them go."

Word of the day

misnomer.

"The expression to make time for is a bit of a misnomer; time can't be created or destroyed."

Decision Making

When you need to make a decision that is big.  Give yourself time to make that decision.

Deliberately plan a time to look at the decision and the road it will take you down.  Explore the avenues  connected to that road because you may be going down that.

After you have made that decision then keep moving forward and seeing where it is going to take you.  If you really feel like you need to turn around then do it but at least give yourself time to explore the decision you've made.

Jokes / Missionary Work

Sharing the gospel is most like sharing a joke from what I have noticed. It is interesting how you rarely hear people share jokes but laughing is one of the greatest and best things to do.

Just like it is great to laugh and tell jokes it is great to talk about the gospel and the happiness it                 has / can brought / bring to my life / my familys' life.

True Doctrine

"By listening to the prophets, keeping an eternal perspective, having faith, and being of good cheer, we can face life's unexpected challenges and "get on with our lives.""

It is THAT time of the year again.

If there is a time to be patient with others / ourselves it would be this time of year.

With every one trying to do new things with their lives (exercise , diet, etc.) people are going to be worn out in general.

This should be passed on and on and on...

The death of FB

I wouldn't bet on in. Peoples usage might be less but I would be surprised if its' user base just dies off.

Inifinite Worry Loops

Infinite worry loops do not help solve problems.

Wise words my Grandfather Norton told my mom. "Worry disavows faith". I think this not only applies to religious pursuits but also anything you pursue. If you are spending time allowing yourself (or possibly causing) to worry then you are taking away time from actually trying to do what you are trying to accomplish.

It is ok to worry a smidgen I think but even then its questionable. If you are worrying then ask yourself -->Why Worry?<-- then write down what you are worrying about and figure it out. Infinite worry loops do not help solve problems.

This is a great talk!

Tech Tip of the day

Tech Tip of the day. When downloading stuff(pictures, music, files, programs, etc.) from the internet use the left mouse button and select "Save As". Doing so will allow yourself to save extra steps in managing your files.

When you click the "Save As" button your computer is allowing you the option to choose where you want to put a file instead of some default location. It just allow for a more organized and efficient setup.

Word of the day segregate - "Friedman and the other codebreakers began to segregate the ciphertext letters into cycles representing the rotation of the coding wheels -- gingerly at first, then faster and faster as the evidence accumulated".

Youtube Downloader

If you just want to download youtube videos to watch offline this is pretty good for the job. I don't know all the limitations but it has worked good thus far in downloading youtube videos which is all I need to do at the moment and it is free.

Not sure if it is a trial or what but if you have a hankering and need to download a few videos it should do the job for you.

Make sure while you are installing that you read unless you want a bunch of extra bloatware on your computer.

Click the "Custom Install" and click to uncheck all the checkmarks and then install.

Log Files

Reading some log files for computers is almost like looking at barf and trying to come up with an explanation.

Computer: Here I just barfed out this information and decided to make a copy so you could look at.
Me: Hmmm...looks a lot like yesterdays.

Social Security Numbers

Social Security Numbers seem soooooo 19th century.  With its' importance in US society and some of the ramifications that come with it you would think that the user of the SSN would have some say in what that number is or part of it would be changeable so that when said distributor of SSNs lost numbers and information then users could change some of the numbers associated with SSNs.

I am just sayin!

Foreign Languages

I think my brain goes crazy / frustrated when trying to look at foreign languages (specifically Asian languages).

I think it translated into something like this :P.

&*()&*#%^*()&@#$(*^#(*&%*(#^$(
*&@#$*(&^*(&

This is my closest exempt at writing in a difficultly written language.

Missionary Work

It is interesting how I think of missionary work in a very negative light. I will be honest that it is hard to get me excited about missionary work.

It is also interesting how many bad things come into our mind once we even start thinking about doing missionary work. Things like "Our friendship will be ruined, everything will be awkward after I talk, I don't know how to do missionary work, I am a hypocrite, and so on."

Instead of imagining all the negative things why don't we instead focus on thinking about and imagining what might happen to a persons life from learning of the gospel and all the blessings that they might be blessed with if they accept.

I think that Satan wants us to focus on the roadblocks, stop signs, etc.

He wants to give us as many detours as he can because by doing so he is defeating Heavenly Fathers' primary goal which is:

39 For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

Design trumps Features

This kind of stuff drives me BONKERS.  Apple is the definition of the title of this rant.

We waste time and money on stuff like toilet bowl brushes because companies need to make money off them.  This is just ridiculous to me.

Why do we need more than one type of toilet brush?  I could understand if there were different shaped toilets but probably 90% are all the same and they are universal and you only do one thing with them.  At least I HOPE you only do ONE thing with them.  Otherwise...ewwww.

This kind of ties into the whole "Tommy Boy" scene where he talks about going to the bathroom in a box and marking it guaranteed waste but instead we are adding a different guarantee onto stuff today because it has the stamp of so and so.

It is like saying "I guarantee this toilet brush is better because it has Picasso's name on it" you will clean the toilet so much better because it will be like cleaning Picasso would clean it.   It is interesting because what would Picasso know about cleaning a toilet anyways.  I thought Picasso was an artist so what would he know about cleaning a toilet?
